SYTYCD: The Blame Game
Tuesday, 12 July 2011

We all know why we’re here, right Gasmi?  Time to lose two more dancers while trying not to lose our sanity.  Welcome!  To So You Think You Dance (dance…….dance)!

SYTYCD20110707a
Disco Ball Cat is back tonight

I’d like her dress more if she hadn’t added that hideous belt.  What’s with the brushed gold studs on the belt over a disco ball SILVER dress?  Cat, darling, sweetheart, honey pie, you must KNOW that I adore you, even love you, but PLEASE hire a stylist.  At least then when I hate your outfit I can blame someone else like I used to!

Okay, sorry about that.  So before I jump into the recap, a couple of things from last week’s comments:  vallegirl, someday I will be stealing that infectious/CDC line.  Apologies in advance if I forget to give you credit.  Thanks for the clip Lizbot.  I always mean to watch other versions of the show, but I am a lazy American so instead, I whine about it.

And…….how can they make the show better?  Hmmmmmmm……how much time do we have?  I think mixing it up as far as the styles go would be a step in the right direction.  What used to be so much fun about this show was when someone killed it unexpectedly in a style that was completely new for them.  I can still remember how blown away I was when Sara and Jesus killed that Wade jazz routine, or Pasha hanging in a hip hop.  I miss the surprise of greatness we sometimes got.  I really could go on and on here: better judging (like this week’s show actually), more/better choreographers, less blatant pimping of certain contestants, etc, etc

SYTYCD20110707b
Leave that to ME, Nigel!

Seriously, I put Danny in here because I fucking adored him, and yet he landed in the bottom 3 week after week.  Nigel didn’t care; they kept him week after week.  But I don’t remember him trying to shove Danny down our throats.  I remember him telling Danny he needed to figure out why America wasn’t voting for him, arguably the BEST dancer there.  We’re not children; we don’t need Nigel (or the other judges to tell us who we should like and then chastise us when we don’t vote for them).  I’m pretty sure Nigel gets all pissy when WE think HE’S gotten it wrong.

Crap.  I am one long winded mother fucker, aren’t I?  Sorry Gasmi, I just love this show (and dance) so fucking much that it pisses me off to no end when they make changes that lessen it.  STOP TRYING TO FIX WHAT WASN’T BROKEN!!!!!!!

Alright, I have got to shut the fuck up now and get to the recap; see what you started, jewel64?  Also, feel free to add your own two cents on show improvement in the comments; I’m sure you guys have ideas and thoughts I haven’t even thought of!  So!  Let’s get to the group number, shall we?

SYTYCD20110707c

SYTYCD20110707d

Well, at least with a Bollywood number there’s no trying to figure out who the choreographer is.  Yep, Nakul. Dur.  As far as the actual routine, it was pretty good for me, I guess.  I always seem to like the group Bollywood numbers better than the partnered ones.  I think it’s because there’s more going on and less like two people hopping around the stage.  I DID notice that there were only six guys dancing (Chris, I think was the missing one) so of course I was obsessing about that.

So, it seems like you guys all enjoyed my trip down memory lane last week, and since you liked it and I liked it, I thought I’d listen to the request and do it again.  So, let’s get our nostalgia on!

Season one didn’t have a top 14 group number.  In reality, season one didn’t really DO group numbers and the top 16 number in last week’s recap was part of the finale.  I didn’t care because top 16 is top 16, but I’m bummed we won’t have more group numbers from this season.

Moving on to season two.  Oh!  The top fourteen number this time around was a jive routine performed to “Footloose” and choreographed by Mary Murphy!!

Footloose

Damn, I always forget how much I enjoyed it when Mary actually choreographed.  This was a really fun number and I had completely forgotten about it (Ramalama pretty much overshadows most of the other group numbers that season for me, in memory at least).

Season three brought us Adam Shankman’s Broadway choreography.

You Can't Stop The Beat

Another really fun number.  I love the show Hairspray so I remember how excited I was that they were doing a number from that show.  Plus Adam was adorable back then and it makes me even sadder that he ended up becoming Mia’s mean girl sidekick last season.  Although, there WAS foreshadowing to that this particular season when he had the audacity to call my beloved Danny arrogant!!!!  I was PISSED y’all.

Season four brings us another Broadway group, but this time with Sir BitchyPants.

Money Money

Urgh.  This is what I was talking about on the recap of this week’s performance show when I was going on about his musicality or lack thereof.  I absolutely LOVE Cabaret so I’m already wired to love this piece.  Nope.  Didn’t happen.  Because as is usually the case with Sir BitchyPants, he misses a great opportunity by being a hack and masturbating all over his Fosse shine.  Note to Nigel:  PLEASE remove Sir BitchyPants from the Broadway pool and leave him in contemporary or jazz.  He sucks at Broadway and because you keep trying to shove him in our faces, we cringe when we hear his name.  Cancer dance aside, I am much more likely to appreciate one of those other genres from him.

One more thing about Cabaret before I move on, Gasmi:  This version of the song is performed by the INCREDIBLE Alan Cumming who I actually saw in the revival of this show.  The cool thing about it was that they performed in the old Studio 54 and it was set up like a cabaret theater, complete with drinks.  My friend Michelle and I scored tickets (thanks to her boss) at the stage right corner of the stage so it really felt almost like we were a part of the show.  SO GREAT.

Okay, sorry about that detour, let’s get back on track with season five’s group routine which is ANOTHER Sir BitchyPants’ Broadway routine.

Brand New Day

I remember being really disappointed in this number, especially given the super hot top 16 number that we had the previous week.  Here’s where Sir BitchyPants tries to get all contem-Broadway and (SHOCKER) fails miserably.

Season six gives us a routine that was mentioned in the comments for last week’s results show recap.  Liz, this one is bound to make you happy!

Aha!

Damn, I miss Wade.  Maybe I should create a macro for that because I’m starting to feel like a broken record.  What else is there to say?

Season seven actually ends up being a little wonky.  So, last week I didn’t post anything because there was no top twenty, but when I started looking at ALL the group numbers by season I realized that the groups diminish by one dancer instead of two week over week because of the format change.  There’s still nothing to post this week, but in the weeks to come we’ll actually have TWO routines each week.  So, maybe something to get excited about or possibly something to create thoughts of suicide, either way it will certainly be interesting.  Fun!

Carmen is not at the judges’ table this evening.

SYTYCD20110707e
Maybe she floated away what with all that hot air filing her head!

Cat asks Travis how it was for him being a judge for the first time.  He says it’s really hard to be a judge and be honest, but at the same time be nice enough because you may have to work with the contestants next week.

SYTYCD20110707f
Don’t worry, you handled it well fella.

Truly, I did enjoy him so much more than I thought I would.  I would actually be happy to see him at that table again.

Cat’s not wasting any more time and calls the first two couples out to the stage.

SYTYCD20110707g

Well, I’m certainly hoping this is one of those fakeouts where both couples are safe, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried at all.  Let’s think about it for a minute.  People adore Melanie and Marko, BUT most people really despised their routine this week.  Is it enough to land them in the bottom?  Also, Caitlynn and Mitchell danced fabulously, but I think Mitchell really aggravates people.  Gah!

SYTYCD20110707h
Phew!

I’m so glad that was a fakeout.  I would have been pissed if wither of these guys were in the bottom.

We take a quick break and return in time for a show produced commercial for National Dance Day.

SYTYCD20110707i
Really?

Is Robin Antin blowing Nigel or something?  I cannot take her.  Apparently they’ve also added a location for National Dance Day: Six Flags.  Ha!  I wonder how much they’re paying Nigel for that free advertising/boost in ticket sales.  What a fucking crock.

SYTYCD20110707j
Roller coasters and dancing go together like money and my pocket!

Nigel says it will be great to do it at Six Flags, but you can really do it anywhere, in fact Donny Osmond is organizing one in Vegas. Whatever, don’t care.

Time for the next three couples, this time we’ve got Ashley and Chris, Clarice and Jess, and Stripperella and Tadd.  Well, I think we all know without a doubt that Ashley and Chris are going to be in the bottom.

SYTYCD20110707k

And Cat doesn’t really waste any time getting to that.  Cat points out to Nigel that it was a bit tough for these guys last night.  He admits it was, but says the whole point of this show is to do styles you’re not accustomed to.  Is he fucking kidding?

SYTYCD20110707l
It is!  Especially when I want you to be the next to go.

I’m still floored that he actually has the audacity to say that given all the fucking contemporary and jazz routines we’ve had this year already INCLUDING those “labeled” as something else like “lyrical hip hop”, “smooth waltz”, etc.  To say that to the pair that has gotten the MOST variety of anyone so far this season is so fucking annoying.  God, I hate him.

Moving on, either Clarice and Jess or Stripperella and Tadd will also be in the bottom.  Personally, I’m thinking it will be Stripperella and Tadd since they’ve been there before.

SYTYCD20110707m

No surprise there.  I’d have rather seen either Ryan and Ricky or Sasha and Alexander there (you know, whichever of them ISN’T there) though considering that Stripperella and Tadd actually performed better than them this week.  But I don’t really like her, so I’m not going to get all worked up about it.

This time Cat goes over to Mary for her comments.  Mary says America must have been in the kitchen while these two were dancing because she is shocked (SHOCKED, I tell you).  She loves them and talks about how Tadd blew her away in that African jazz their first week.  She can’t wait to see their solos though, and she knows they are really going to bring it tonight.

Last grouping.  Will it be Ryan and Ricky or Sasha and Alexander?

SYTYCD20110707n

Again, no surprise here, although as I said earlier, I would have been happier with BOTH of these couples in the bottom.

Travis is shocked and confused because he thought they were one of the better couples.  He thinks America got it wrong.  No Travis.  Don’t go there.  America can’t stand half of that couple.  THAT’S why they’re in the bottom.  Period.  End of story.

SYTYCD20110707o
I’m just sa-

Shhhhhhh.  Stop.  There are plenty of times I disagree with America (or more often the JUDGES) decisions too and Nigel basically tells me to suck it up.  I now say that back to you.  Also?  I pretty sure Ryan’s not going anywhere so wah, wah, wah.  I’m still pissed about Nick and I didn’t get a chance to save him.  Why do I get myself all worked up about these things?  I just really hate it that the judges could care less who America likes but when America doesn’t vote for their favorites it’s because we’re a bunch of dance morons. Danrons, if you will.

Alright.  I gotta move on or we’ll be here forever.  Now that we’ve identified the bottom three couples, it’s time for the first guest performance of the evening.  They are an NYC based dance company called Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet.

SYTYCD20110707p

SYTYCD20110707q

Niiiiiiiiice.  I think we’ve already established that I would always rather see a dance performance (double dance performances, really) on the results show.  I really enjoyed this piece, although the lighting they used seemed to wash out some of the sections a little too much for me.  But as far as the dancing goes?  YES.

Solo time.

Ashley’s up first.

SYTYCD20110707r

While I appreciate she’s not wearing a bra and booty shorts while flailing around the stage in an angsty manner…..zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Chris’ turn.

SYTYCD20110707s

He’s got some cool moves going on in there but I am so bored by him in the performances that it doesn’t matter to me at this point.  Also, some of those moves are repeats of cool moves he’s already done.  Jussayin.

Stripperella’s up.

SYTYCD20110707t

Her signature move repeatedly.  I am OVER it.

Let’s move on to Tadd.

SYTYCD20110707u

I love that he danced to Gloria Estefan but if I’m being honest, that solo was not good.  Yes, it was fun and no, I don’t want him to go home because of it, but he really needs to step his game up.

Ryan’s turn.

SYTYCD20110707v

UGH.  I just do not enjoy watching this girl dance.  I know I am biased toward certain dancers; I definitely have a style or certain type that I enjoy more than others.  And she just doesn’t have it for me.  I love watching someone that makes it look effortless, like they are weightless.  The guest dancers last week are a perfect example.  Ryan has no grace in her movements.  I SEE the effort; can almost feel it.

And last but not least, Ricky.

SYTYCD20110707w

His is my favorite solo of the night.  But, if I’m being completely honest it still was not a blow away for me.  It’s funny, my sister and I were talking while watching this week and I made a comment about him reminding me of Danny, but quickly added a caveat about it being his look, not his dancing.  He doesn’t have the maturity or finesse that Danny has and while I think he is extremely good, he doesn’t have that maturity in his dancing yet.  That said, his is the only one I’d watch again.

Time for deliberations.  While the judges head off to find out who Nigel has decided is leaving tonight, we have time for another guest performance.  This time it’s not a dance performance (BOOOOOO) instead, we get Florence and the Machine.

SYTYCD20110707x

I will never understand why we can’t ALWAYS have dance performances here instead.  Like EVERY TIME.

So we take a quick break and then we’re back to find out who the judges are kicking out this week.  Cat says there are tears on the stage already and that’s because these kids are no dummies.  I’m sure they have already figured out which of them are leaving tonight.

Nigel says all the girls on the show are beautiful and then uses that as an opportunity to tell everyone that Kim Kardashian is in the audience tonight.

SYTYCD20110707y
With Jokerface, Robin Antin

What the fuck?!?!?!?  Why am I being subjected to Jokerface more than once tonight?  And why are we wasting time with a celebrity shoutout when it’s time to find out who is staying and going?  He is such a jackass.

Nigel says he’s got a note for all the girls and the guys, really.  He tells then that they have to give them different sides of them; they need to up their game.  He calls forward Stripperella and tells her that is a major note for her if she stays tonight.  Dance is more than developpes and she needs to start showing that.

Next he calls Ryan forward.  He says they love her and it was a really good routine tonight.  He obviously forgot to put his contacts in before the show.  Then he calls Ashley forward.  He tells her she has been really good throughout along a very high level, but they haven’t ever really seen her peak.  Which is why she’s going home tonight.

SYTYCD20110707z
She knew that was coming, don’t you think?

There’s a lotta crying going on in the dancers’ holding pen as we go into her good bye montage.  Afterward Cat asks if she has anything she’d like to say.  She says thank you and talks about what an honor it’s been to dance on the stage and she’s breaking up a little here and Travis has his hand over his heart like she’s breaking it a little with her words.

SYTYCD20110707aa
While the other two stare off into space.

Time for the guys.  Nigel asks Ricky to step forward.  He tells him that when they were backstage deliberating, Travis said that after Marko, he’s the best male contemporary dancer they’ve got.  Somehow he and his partner are not connecting with America and he needs to think about that.  Suck it, Nigel.  They’re landing in the bottom because of his partner, not him.  His only problem is that he can’t generate enough votes to overcome how much people dislike her.

I can’t believe he tells Ricky this but tells Ryan how gorgeous her solo was.  Are you fucking kidding me?!?!?  Is he really that delusional that he thinks RICKY is to blame for it?  GAH!!!

He has Chris step forward and I break out in a cold sweat for Tadd.  He tells Chris that whenever it comes to dancing for his life, he always brings out his best routines.  Tadd’s turn.  Nigel tells him that Travis said he really wants to work with Tadd, which is why I guess that he tells him to step back and calls Chris forward again.

SYTYCD20110707ab
And tells him he’s out.

I’m glad for Tadd, but that was a mean way of doing that, don’t you think?  I feel like he gave Chris a little glimmer of hope there, maybe it wouldn’t be him, and then just like Lucy, he pulls the football away at the very last moment.

At the end of the day I’m not all broken up about it, I just think it was a little mean.  We get our good bye Chris montage and at the end of it Chris is trying to smile through his tears, without success.  He doesn’t get any final words which is probably just as well as he probably would have broken down as well.

And there you have it, Gasmi.  What did you think of the booting this week?  Did you think they made the right decision?  I really hope they start booting without sticking to partnerships soon because this is annoying and getting old.  I’m not livid about it this week because I figured that was going to happen and I don’t love either of them enough to be enraged by the choice.  It’s just one more example of a bad choice they’ve made in the mechanics of the show.

Anyway, I can’t wait to hear what you all think.  And don’t forget that this Wednesday at 10pm (on Lifetime) the new show Dance Moms premieres.  As I mentioned before, I’ll be recapping that one as well and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that these moms are even a quarter of the crazy that DearCrabby has to work with on Toddlers and Tiara!  Holla Crabby!  Hope to see y’all pop in for a visit over there!

SWAK, PottyMouth
