 Roberto Luongo has been quite the arrogant snob over the past few days.
After Max LaPierre took a courtesy bounce off the back wall and wrapped the puck around the inside post past Bruins' goalie Tim Thomas, the Canucks as such are up 3-2 with a chance to clinch the Stanley Cup in Game 6 in Boston tonight. While the Bruins have been working out the kinks in order to even up the series and force a Game 7, the Canucks' goalie has spent the last couple days displaying a hint of arrogance. While most were praising the hard work of Thomas in Game 5, Luongo decided to criticize his counterpart by saying "it's an easy save for me." That is a bold statement from someone who gave up two goals in less than two games and was pulled before the end of the second. It was even bolder a couple days later when the Olympic gold medalist decided to respond to Thomas, who had not yet responded to the words of Luongo, by saying that he had not heard Thomas say one good thing about him all series. Oh, Mr. Luongo, master of the net, since when is the other team's goalie supposed to kiss the ground you walk on? Luongo acts as if he was the best goaltender in the NHL this season. In reality, it was Timmy T who set the record for goals against average in a season and it is Thomas who is still favorite to win the Conn Smythe Trophy. It's also Thomas who has given up the fewer goals this series, with the Bruins outscoring Vancouver 14-6. Obviously, this does not mean much to the series as Vancouver leads, but in terms of head-to-head goaltending, Thomas is the better goalie. Yet Thomas has decided to be the bigger man in this situation, well, actually, the only man. He finally addressed the issue by saying he would not discuss the issue and he only cared about being ready for Monday. It was not the first controversial issue of the series as both sides have had their share of foul play, but Luongo would rather talk than fight for the Cup it seems. This series has had it all and has been an exciting spectacle to watch. But the talk can only take place until the puck drops. Both Luongo and Thomas are going to have to be on their best tonight. Its been a fantastic battle of the two best goaltenders in the world, a battle of the two best teams in the league. Luongo can talk all he wants. The Canucks may have a 3-2 lead, but he will have to outplay Thomas if he wants to win the Cup.
