Sequel Bits: Paul Feig Working on Mysterious Reboot, ‘Ferris Bueller’ Sequel May Be a Possibility, ‘
Thursday, 16 June 2011

[1] We already know that director Paul Feig will be reteaming [2] with Jon Hamm, Melissa McCarthy, and Judd Apatow for a new movie -- but it turns out Feig has another mysterious project on the horizon as well. Feig spilled the beans in an interview with Moviehole [3], where he said the following: "There’s actually something in the fall that… is a sequel to a movie that people know but I can’t really talk about it yet; we’re still trying to finalize it. That would be fun. It’s something I've wanted to with some actors I've wanted to work with." Feig went on to say that the sequel in question is not a sequel to Bridesmaids or even, technically, a sequel -- rather, the mystery project will be a "reboot" of a well-known franchise. He added, "I want to talk about it but it might not happen because of actors deals and so on so I better remain mysterious." Care to take a guess at what Feig might be talking about? After the jump, possible sequels for two very different '80s flicks. Back in 2007, TampaBay.com's Stuck in the '80s [4] blog reported on a screenplay for a possible sequel to Ferris Bueller's Day Off being shopped around Hollywood by relatively unknown writer Rick Rapier. The site apparently loved the script, which picks up with the gang roughly 20 years later. Ferris has become a famed motivational speaker, with best friend and business partner Cameron by his side and Rooney still stalking him from afar. However, Ferris is feeling unfulfilled, and so he decides to take his 40th birthday off. We hadn't heard much else about the possible sequel since then, but earlier this week, Rapier tweeted [5] that some people had expressed interest in his sequel: Wish I could tweet names of ppl reading my #FerrisBueller sequel. Your jaw would drop. I'm stoked! Plz keep a good thot. What people? Rapier expanded a bit in a recent conversation with Stuck in the '80s [6] (via FirstShowing [7]): There is definite interest in my Ferris sequel. Big name production companies that have first-look production deals with Paramount are reading the script. Your readers would know either their names or have seen movies they've produced, some of them classics. We have high hopes that one or more will take an interest, and that Paramount brass will go for it on their advice. The idea of a Ferris Bueller sequel initially struck me as absurd, but Hollywood's currently scraping [8] the bottom of your childhood toybox in a desperate attempt to avoid producing anything original -- the more I think about this, the less crazy it sounds. Whether the movie would actually be any good is another question. Check out the first twelve pages of the script here [9], and judge for yourself. And finally, news on another possible sequel to another beloved '80s flick -- the Chiodo Brothers' comedy-horror cult classic Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Freddy in Space [10] (via Bloody Disgusting [11]) recently spoke with Grant Cramer, who starred in the original 1988 film and wrote the script for the sequel. When asked for an update on the upcoming film, titled The Return of the Killer Klowns from Outer Space in 3-D, Cramer gave this promising reply: We have a script and a commitment for all our funding but the money can't be spent until we have a distribution deal in place so that's where we are – talking to distributors. As soon as that final piece comes into place we should be pretty much good to go. Cramer also revealed a tiny bit about the movie's plotline: [It] is connected to the first movie and my character will be the mentor to the two new young leads that have to try save the world from the Klowns when they return. They're also trying to save themselves because the bad stuff the Klowns do at first gets blamed on them. The Chiodo brothers are expected to produce, with Stephen Chiodo back in the director's chair. We don't have a bunch of pages from the script to show you, as we did with the Ferris sequel, but watch a text-heavy teaser from Cramer's YouTube site below.
