Minnesota Twins: A Victory on Harmon Killebrew's Birthday Means a Series Win
Thursday, 30 June 2011

Scott Baker (6-5, 3.15 ERA) provided the home crowd with some afternoon delight at Target Field, striking out nine and out-dueling Dodger starter Rubby De La Rosa (3-3, 4.47 ERA) as the Twins posted a 1-0 victory on the birthday of the late Harmon Killebrew. The Twins took the series 2-1, rebounding from Monday's 15-0 drubbing with gritty wins in the final two games.

Late arrivals to the 12:10 p.m. matinee missed the only scoring of the afternoon, as Tsuyoshi Nishioka's RBI groundout in the bottom of the first allowed Ben Revere to scamper home for what turned out to be the winning run. Revere was on third after leading off the game with a triple to the gap in right center.

One run was all the Twins needed, as Glen Perkins (0-1, 1.93 ERA) and Matt Capps (2-3, 3.71 ERA) sealed the win after Baker exited to a standing ovation with one out in the eighth.  Perkins entered the game with a runner on first and Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp due up.  He quickly dispatched the dangerous duo, fanning both on a total of six pitches to end the threat.  Capps followed with a scoreless ninth for his second save in two days, upping his season total to 13.

Notes and Numbers:

Announced attendance was 39,655.  Joe Mauer went 1-3 with a double, extending his hitting streak to five games.  In addition to his triple, Revere singled and very nearly made a spectacular catch to rob Kemp of a sixth-inning double.  The Twins acknowledged the birthday of the late Harmon Killebrew with a pregame announcement.  In an extraordinary coincidence, Killebrew's 6/29 date of birth contains the retired numbers of Twins greats Tony Oliva (6) and Rod Carew (29).
