Manchester United Transfer News Sees Club Close to Landing Villa Star Ashley Young, But Is He a Good Fit?
As Manchester United head into their offseason, the club looks to re-vamp their roster on the fly. One of the paramount areas to rebuild remains the midfield, where the Red Devils found themselves outclassed by Barcelona in the Champions League finals.
Fortunately, the club looks poised for a spending spree, and have set their sights on one of the more talented wingers in the sport: Aston Villa's Ashley Young.
But, is the English international star really a good fit at Old Trafford? Is he truly the right man for the job in United's attack?
After all, Ferguson has a pair of wings he can call on at present, in Antonio Valencia and Nani, who are the same age or younger than Young is. On top of that, the forward line appears set with Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney at striker, so where does Young fit?
While it's true that Young would be entering a less-than-ideal situation at the moment, bear in mind that Nani has looked headed for the door for nearly two seasons now, and his slightly subpar play down the stretch resulted in his lack of playing time in crucial games. On top of that, there's no reason to view Young as an inferior player to either Valencia or Nani, and he is certainly more consistent than the latter on the pitch. With his offensive gifts paired with either one of those players, he allows Ferguson the freedom to mix and match his midfield however he sees fit.
There's also a chance that Young finds himself in the central midfield, making plays and creating chances for teammates, but that seems less likely than United dealing Nani at this point.
While the deal is far from official, this could be the right kind of upgrade for United going forward. Young is a more consistent winger than Nani, and brings the kind of skill and finesse this club could use at the position going forward. As long as he maintains the form he had at Villa Park, there's no reason Young cannot continue his rise to stardom as a member of United.
