I am becoming slightly conflicted about Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman, which is moving forward with Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman, Kristen Stewart as Snow White, Sam Claflin as her Prince and Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen.
I'm conflicted because there are eight dwarf roles in the film, and it would be rather nice to see them filled out by little people. But the producers and director Rupert Sanders are choosing instead to follow some of Peter Jackson's methods, and use established character actors of average adult size. But when that cast includes Ian McShane, cast last night [1], and now Eddie Izzard, Bob Hoskins and Toby Jones, it is pretty damn difficult to argue with the choices.
Here's the list of little characters from Huntsman, now filled out with extra actors thanks to THR [2]:
Caesar: the eldest, with the longest beard. (Ian McShane)
Nero: the angry one.
Tiberius: the biggest and burliest. (Eddie Izzard)
Hadrian and Trajan: the twins.
Constantine: solemn and blind. (Bob Hoskins)
Claudius: the timid one. (Toby Jones)
Gus: young, un-bearded, seemingly smitten with Snow White.
So: three or four roles left to cast, depending upon whether one actor or two is chosen to play the twins. Eddie Marsan and Stephen Graham are in talks, too, but we don't know for which roles. Either of them could be Gus, or with some makeup they could play the twins. Eddie Marsan would also be fun as Nero.
Rupert Sanders will direct Snow White and the Huntsman from a script by Evan Daugherty that is getting some last-minute revision by Evan Spiliotopoulos. Chris Hemsworth plays Eric, the Huntsman charged by the evil queen (Charlize Theron) with killing Snow White (Kristen Stewart) but who mentors her instead in the ways of survival and combat.
Oh, and in a related piece of news, a lovely little interview with Bob Hoskins was published in The Guardian [3], in which the actor answered a few questions like so:
