Arsenal Transfer Rumors Have Been Flying As Of Late, But Will Arsene Wenger Disappoint For years, Arsenal fans have clamored for Arsene Wenger to spend money in the transfer market, to bring some top talent in an help win some championships for a fanbase that is used to continued success. After the disappointing finish to this past season, where the Gunners collapsed in the Premier League title chase, lost every competition they were in, the rage was blinding. The heat turned up on Wenger, as people called for him to be sacked in the wake of a fourth place finish in the league. With the pressure rising, there were expectations that there would be a shift in philosophy with Arsenal, that the club would spend money and bring in talented, experienced players, instead of heavily leaning on the development side of things. However, recent comments from Wenger should have fans of the club worried. Per Mirror Football: "We get it 95 per cent right, but we must gain that five per cent because it's so frustrating to flirt with success like we have done. "The fans are unhappy that we didn't win the Premier League, but we are close. In 2003 we were also the best away team, but didn't win. We kept going and in 2004 we were very strong."
Well, he's half right. Arsenal does need to get taller, but to think this club is close to greatness is a pretty large leap of faith. The Gunners have major issues, especially on the offensive end, as they need players who can put the ball in the back of the net, and other than Robin Van Persie, few other Arsenal players did that with any consistency. Wenger has said he doesn't feel like the team has to spend money to be successful, and that isn't the truth either. If you want to compete, you can't be afraid to spend when you have targets that you want on your roster. You can't give up on development for the sake of spending, but blending the two is the way to become truly great, and I don't believe Wenger has a grasp of that.
