2011 MLB Mock Draft Takes a Look at Matt Purke's Prospects TCU lefty Matt Purke had a shot to turn pro in 2009, as the Texas Rangers selected him with the 14th pick in the first round. They also offered him $4 million. He turned it down, deciding to give college a try instead. As a freshman, Purke was dominant, going 16-0 with 142 strikeouts in 116 innings. Unfortunately, he was shut down with a shoulder issue earlier this spring, and has notched just 55 strikeouts in 47 2/3 innings. Naturally, his draft stock has taken a hit. He is still a first-round talent, but he has probably gone from being a top 10 pick to a mid-to-late first-rounder. MUST READ: The 50 Greatest Walk-Off Home Runs in Baseball History
The trouble is that he apparently hasn't adjusted his rates accordingly. The word from the Fort Worth Star Telegram is that Purke wants something in the neighborhood of $7.5 million. In all likelihood, he'll only be offered $4 or $5 million. That leaves Purke with two options: he can either take what's offered, or he can go back to school for his junior season in hopes that he will be worth more next season. The risk there is that Purke may not be worth as much next season. He may get hurt again, or he might struggle. Either way, the ball is in Purke's court. 1.
